How the numbers are calculated
The upfront advance is your unpaid invoices multiplied by the advance level. When customers pay, the remaining balance comes back to you less the funder's fees. Adding the two together and subtracting fees gives what you end up with in total. The cost per day of waiting saved divides total fees by the number of days you would otherwise have waited, which is a handy way to weigh the price against what that time is worth to your business.
When invoice finance fits
It suits businesses that sell to other businesses on terms and have a reliable book of customers, such as wholesalers, manufacturers, labour hire firms, transport operators and professional services. It grows with your sales, because more invoices mean more available funding. It is far less useful for businesses paid on the spot, like cafes and retailers, where there are no invoices to advance against.
Invoice finance compared with a line of credit
Both smooth timing gaps. Invoice finance is tied to specific invoices and rises and falls with your debtor book. A business line of credit gives you a set limit to draw on for any purpose, regardless of who owes you money. Our side-by-side guide, invoice finance or a line of credit, explains which suits which situation.
Questions to ask a funder
- Is it whole-of-ledger or can I choose individual invoices?
- Will my customers know, and who collects the payments?
- What happens if a customer pays late or does not pay at all?
- What are all the fees in dollars for a typical month?

Questions about this calculator
How does invoice finance work?
A funder advances part of the value of invoices you have issued to business customers, usually within a short time of the invoice being raised. When the customer pays, the funder releases the rest of the invoice to you, less its fees.
What advance percentage should I enter?
Use the figure in a quote if you have one. If not, try a few settings to see how the upfront cash changes. Advance levels vary between funders and depend on your customers, your industry and how reliably invoices are paid.
What counts as the total cost?
Every fee the funder charges for the invoices you are modelling: service or discount fees, any establishment cost and other charges. Ask the funder to show you the total in dollars for a typical batch so you can enter it here.
Which invoices usually qualify?
Invoices to other businesses or government for goods or services already delivered, with clear payment terms. Invoices to consumers, progress claims still in dispute and invoices to related parties are commonly excluded.
Is anything I enter saved?
No. The calculator runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
