Why plan your drawdowns?
A line of credit is most useful when you know roughly when you will lean on it and when the money will come back. Planning draws against expected repayments shows whether your limit is the right size, how long the balance stays high and whether the facility is doing its job of smoothing timing rather than quietly funding losses.
What the results mean
The peak balance is the most you owe at any month end. Peak usage shows that as a share of your limit; regularly running above about four fifths of the limit leaves little room for surprises. The lowest funds available is your safety net at the tightest point. The average drawn balance is the figure most pricing is based on, so it is the one to ask the lender about. A balance that never returns towards zero suggests the facility is propping up the business rather than bridging gaps.
Using a line of credit well
- Draw for timing gaps that have a clear end, such as wages before a large invoice is paid.
- Repay as soon as the cash lands so the facility is ready for the next gap.
- Keep an eye on the drawn balance each month and investigate if it keeps creeping up.
- Do not use it for long-life assets that suit a dedicated term loan or equipment finance.
Our business line of credit page explains how these facilities work, and the guide line of credit or business loan helps you choose. When you are ready, start a 60-second enquiry. No credit check to enquire.
Questions about this calculator
What is a drawdown?
A drawdown is money you take from your line of credit. You can draw part of your limit, repay it, and draw it again later. Your available balance is the limit minus whatever you currently owe.
Why does the planner not calculate interest?
Lines of credit are priced in different ways, from interest on the drawn balance to fees per drawdown. Rather than guess, the planner shows your drawn balance month by month. Ask the lender how its pricing applies to that balance and you can work out the cost accurately.
How should I choose my limit?
A limit should cover your largest realistic gap plus a buffer, not the biggest number available. The cash flow gap calculator helps you find that figure.
What happens if I hit my limit?
You cannot draw more until you repay some of the balance. If you keep hitting the limit, the facility may be too small for your cash cycle, or the business may have a margin problem that borrowing will not solve.
Is my data saved?
No. The planner runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
