Quick answer

A business overdraft lets your transaction account go below zero up to a limit, but banks often want property security, detailed financials and weeks of assessment. Alternatives include unsecured business lines of credit, typically $5k to $500k and assessed on bank statements, invoice finance for B2B businesses and short-term loans for one-off gaps. Each offers similar flexibility without tying the facility to your home.

Key points

  • Bank overdrafts often require property and full financials.
  • An unsecured line of credit does a similar job without property.
  • Invoice finance can replace an overdraft for B2B businesses.
  • Keep the facility for timing gaps, not ongoing losses.

For decades the business overdraft was the default safety net for Australian small businesses. Then the forms got longer. Today, many owners asking their bank for an overdraft hear the same conditions: put up property, provide two years of financials, wait a few weeks. If you do not own property, or you do not want the family home tied to a working account, the overdraft door can feel shut. The good news is that the job an overdraft does can be done in other ways.

What an overdraft actually does

An overdraft lets your transaction account dip below zero up to an agreed limit. You pay for the days it is overdrawn, and as deposits arrive the balance returns above zero. It is used for:

  • Wages a few days before customers pay.
  • Supplier payments that come before sales.
  • Unexpected costs that cannot wait.
  • Smoothing seasonal or lumpy income.

In other words, it is a revolving facility for short timing gaps. Anything else that offers revolving access to funds can do the same job.

The main alternatives

Unsecured business line of credit. The closest substitute. You have a limit, typically $5k to $500k, that you draw from and repay as needed, assessed on your bank statements rather than property. The main practical difference is that you transfer funds from the facility into your account instead of the account simply going negative. See business line of credit.

Invoice finance. If your gaps are caused by business customers paying on 30 to 90-day terms, a facility linked to your invoices can replace an overdraft and grow as your sales grow. See invoice finance.

Short-term loan. If you only need a buffer once or twice a year, a short-term business loan for a specific gap may cost less than keeping a facility open all year.

Business credit card. Useful for small, frequent expenses but not usually suited to wages or large supplier payments. See our guide on business credit cards versus business loans.

When the bank has said no

Many owners arrive here after a bank has declined, reduced or not renewed an overdraft. That is not unusual, and it is not necessarily a reflection of the business’s health; bank policies change, and some industries fall out of favour with particular lenders. Cash flow lenders look at the business differently, through recent trading. Be upfront about what happened, because the lender will want to understand the context. Our page on being declined by the bank covers what to do next.

Using a revolving facility responsibly

The risk with any overdraft-style facility is that it slowly becomes permanent. If your drawn balance never returns close to zero, the facility is funding something other than timing, often a margin problem or a long-term asset. A few habits keep it healthy:

  • Draw for gaps with a known end.
  • Repay as soon as the cash lands.
  • Track the balance monthly with the drawdown planner.
  • Fund long-life equipment with equipment finance instead.

How limits are set

Lenders size revolving facilities against average deposits, existing commitments and the consistency of income. They also consider how deep your typical gaps run, which is why bringing a forecast helps. The cash flow gap calculator gives you the peak shortfall over twelve weeks. Asking for a limit close to that figure, plus a buffer, shows you understand your own business and usually leads to a faster decision.

Preparing for the conversation

Overdraft alternatives are assessed quickly, but a little preparation makes the result better. Separate personal and business spending so the account reflects the business alone. Note any existing facilities, including credit cards and equipment leases, because they all draw on the same cash flow. Write down the two or three biggest gaps you had in the past year and what caused them, such as a large customer paying late or a slow winter. A lender who understands why the gaps happen can set a limit that fits them, rather than guessing.

If your bank has given you notice that an overdraft will be reduced, start the conversation early. Replacing a facility before it ends is far easier than scrambling after the account has started bouncing payments.

An illustrative example

An illustrative event hire business has busy and quiet months, pays casual staff weekly and invoices corporate clients after each event. Its bank offered an overdraft only against the owner’s home. Instead, the business set up an unsecured line of credit sized to its typical six-week gap. It draws before big event weekends to pay staff and suppliers and repays as clients settle their invoices, keeping the home out of it entirely.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an overdraft and a line of credit?

An overdraft is attached to your everyday transaction account, which can go below zero up to a limit. A line of credit is a separate facility you draw from into your account. Both are revolving, but lines of credit from cash flow lenders are often unsecured.

Why does my bank want security for an overdraft?

Banks typically price and approve overdrafts against security such as property because it reduces their risk. Cash flow lenders instead rely on your trading history and a personal guarantee.

Can I have a bank overdraft and a line of credit?

Yes, as long as your cash flow supports both. Lenders will see both facilities in your statements and factor in the total commitment.

Are alternatives more expensive than a bank overdraft?

Unsecured facilities are usually priced higher than property-secured bank overdrafts, but they are faster and do not put your home on the line. Compare total costs on realistic usage.

What if my bank has reduced or cancelled my overdraft?

A cash flow line of credit can often fill the gap. Be upfront about what happened with the bank, because lenders will want to understand it.
